Finding Serenity in the Midst of the City: A Day at the U. S National Arboretum

Washington D. C is a bustling city that never sleeps. The capital of the United States is known for its iconic monuments, museums, and political landmarks. However, amidst all this hustle and bustle, it can be challenging to find some peace and quiet. But not all hope is lost; there are still a few hidden gems in the city where you can escape the chaos and find serenity. One such place is the U. S National Arboretum.

The U. S National Arboretum is a 446-acre park located in Northeast Washington D. C. It was established in 1927 and has since become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The arboretum features a wide variety of plant collections, gardens, and natural landscapes that are sure to take your breath away.

I recently visited the U. S National Arboretum on a beautiful spring day, and it was nothing short of magical. As soon as I entered the park, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The chirping birds, swaying trees, and colorful flowers created a peaceful atmosphere that was hard to find in the city.

One of the first things that caught my attention was the famous Capitol Columns. These 23 Corinthian columns were originally part of the U. S Capitol building but were removed during renovations in the 1950s. They now stand tall and proud in the heart of the arboretum, surrounded by blooming flowers and lush greenery. The columns create a stunning visual display that is both majestic and serene.

As I walked further into the park, I came across the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum. This museum features an impressive collection of miniature trees from Japan, China, Korea, and the United States. Each tree is meticulously cared for and artistically displayed in a peaceful setting that invites visitors to slow down and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Next, I stumbled upon the National Herb Garden, which showcases over 100 different herbs from around the world. The garden is divided into sections based on the herbs’ uses, such as culinary, medicinal, and fragrant. As I walked through the garden, I took in the aroma of lavender, rosemary, and mint, which was both refreshing and calming.

The arboretum also features several other gardens, including the Asian Collections, the Azalea Collection, and the Conifer Collection. Each garden has its unique charm and offers visitors a chance to explore different aspects of nature.

As I walked around the park, I couldn’t help but notice how quiet it was. It was as if the hustle and bustle of the city had disappeared, and all that remained was the sound of nature

The journey continues, see you tomorrow for more discoveries.
